Aons: The Gateways to the Magic of Elantris. The Aons are symbols, used both in the Aonic language and in Elantrian magic.

When using an Aon to focus the magic of AonDor, the magic of Elantris, the caster simply draws the specific Aon in the air before him. As their finger moves through air, the Aon appears, outlined in a luminescent glow. Once the specific Aon has been completed it will act as a focusing eye, channeling the magic of AonDor, to create whatever magical effect the caster desires. Specific Aons are associated with specific magical effects, some are used for healing, some are used to create light, while others still can be used as a type of offensive weapon.

Before the Reod, the Aons were a source of power. To be able to focus the magic of AonDor, made the wielder a god among men. After the Reod, the Aons sufferd the same fate as the rest of Elantris, they became a mere shell of what they once were, empty, hollow reminders of the greatness they once empowered.
